AHA comments on LTC facilities staffing standards

The American Hospital Association submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services urging the agency to scratch its proposal to implement minimum staffing standards for long-term care facilities. The AHA states implementing mandatory nurse staffing levels is an “overly simplistic approach to a complex issue that, if implemented, would have serious negative unintended consequences for...the entire health care continuum.” The AHA and AONL contend safe staffing is a complex and dynamic process that should consider patient acuity, the experience and clinical expertise of the care team and the technical capabilities of the facility. The AHA also submitted testimony last week on the issue to the House Energy and Commerce health subcommittee. Comments on the proposed rule are due Nov. 6. (AHA letter, 10/26/23)
