AHA describes how tariffs could affect health care

The Trump administration’s tariffs could have significant implications for health care, according to American Hospital Association Board Chair Tina Freese Decker, MHA. President and CEO  at Corewell Health, Grand Rapids, Mich., Decker says a significant portion of medical goods comes from international sources, including drugs, devices and personal protective equipment. Tariffs on these items could affect patient care by “jeopardizing the availability of vital medications and essential health care devices.” They also could raise hospital costs, worsen shortages and cause supply chain disruptions. The AHA has requested tariff exemptions for medications and medical supplies. (AHA Chairperson’s File article, 5/19/25)
