CDC data shows COVID-19 rates rising

COVID-19 cases likely are increasing in 25 states, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. The rise in cases ─ part of this year’s summer wave of the virus ─ is occurring primarily in Southeast, Southern and West Coast states. However, based on wastewater samples, COVID-19 rates still are considered “low,” although that number is up from “very low” from the prior week. A CDC analysis finds the virus has two surges nationwide, typically peaking in July through September and then December through February. Separately, the Food and Drug Administration approved Moderna’s Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine for older adults and high-risk children under age 12. The vaccine will be available for the 2025-2026 respiratory virus season.
