Hospital engages nurses in professional governance across service line

A quality improvement project initiated by nursing leaders at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta strengthened post-pandemic professional governance, according to an article published in the October issue of Nurse Leader. The quality improvement project developed and implemented a professional governance council across eight medical-surgical units of a hospital service line focused on the care of complex patients. After the pandemic, fewer nurses participated in professional governance councils, while more nurses were working on multiple med-surg units that shared greater clinical, administrative and educational resources than before the pandemic. Over three months, the project succeeded in engaging 22 clinical nurses and five nurse leaders across the service line to participate in a professional governance council. In a survey, they reported statistically significant improved average work empowerment scores.
