Millions drop ACA coverage after subsidies expire

Around four million Americans dropped Affordable Care Act insurance coverage since January, due to high costs caused by the termination of enhanced subsidies. About 19.2 million people were enrolled in ACA plans in February, a decline of more than 16% from the 23 million people who signed up for coverage at the end of open enrollment, according to the Health and Human Services department. ACA insurance coverage rose significantly during the Biden administration. Policymakers are concerned that falling enrollments and many people changing to less generous, high-deductible plans could reduce stability. Congressional Republicans did not extend expiring enhanced subsidies at the end of 2024. (The Hill article, 6/27/26)
