More evidence needed on nursing intervention effectiveness in reducing non-device infections

Although nursing care interventions could play an important role in preventing non-device-associated health care-acquired infections, more evidence is needed to determine whether they do, according to a scoping analysis of 159 studies. Published in the American Journal of Infection Control, the researchers suggest that prioritizing nursing care through organizational support, leadership, education and staffing can result in measurable infection reductions while underscoring the value of nursing excellence in multidisciplinary infection prevention programs. They call for future research to explore the impact of nursing care interventions on non-device-associated health care-acquired infections as well as identifying the organizational, educational and workflow factors needed to implement holistic care.
