RN turnover reaches 100% in skilled nursing facilities from 2012 to 2023
RN turnover ranged from 18% in hospitals to 100% in skilled nursing facilities between 2012 and 2023, according to a study of 2.8 million RNs and 1.4 million nurse assistants. Published in Health Affairs, the study found wages and insufficient staffing and burnout influenced nurses’ decision to leave or accept a position. While RNs comprise the largest clinical workforce in the U.S., they saw the smallest wage growth (0.51%) among health care professions. While nurse aides had the largest wage gains (1.48%), they, along with licensed practical nurses, earned the lowest salaries among the occupations studied. The authors note the RN workforce is less experienced, potentially resulting in lower wages. (McKnight’s Senior Living article, 10/14/25)
