Resources, increased training can combat CNA shortage

A lack of resources and advancement opportunities is contributing to the certified nurse assistant shortage in long-term care settings, according to an article published in The Gerontologist. The authors identify challenges in compensation, recruitment and retention as main factors contributing to the shortage, which was exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Direct resident care can take a physical and emotional toll on CNAs, who often lack access to mental health resources. Furthermore, barriers to training, a general lack of awareness of the career, financial constraints and accessibility of certification tests lead to lower CNA retention. Improving access to training, setting up tracks for career advancement and supporting initiatives to increase pay can combat the shortage, the authors say. (Newswise news release, 8/13/25)
