Study: One-size-fits all blood pressure cuffs result in inaccurate readings

Using an automated regular blood pressure cuff for all arm circumferences resulted in inaccurate readings, according to a study. Published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine, the randomized trial included 195 adults with a wide range of mid-arm circumferences. The study found measurements obtained when the regular blood pressure cuff was too large resulted in clinically significant lower readings. When the cuff was too small, patients had clinically significant higher readings. The authors suggest clinicians use individualized blood pressure cuff selection, particularly for individuals with larger arm sizes. (JAMA Internal Medicine study, 8/7/23)
