Study identifies factors in nursing turnover
Addressing new graduate nursing turnover takes coordinated strategies that augment systemic support across transition, readiness, identity, development and environment, according to a scoping review published in Nursing Outlook. To strengthen retention, the researchers recommend hospitals provide structured onboarding, effective mentorship, supportive leadership and improved work-life balance. They say organizations addressing systemic disruptions ─ instead of isolated problems such as staffing levels, burnout scores or onboarding duration ─ can create environments fostering resilience, professional identity and long-term commitment among novice nurses. They encourage managers to evaluate onboarding processes and role clarity; perceived readiness and preparation for practice; and professional identity formation and sense of belonging.
