UC Health uses remote nurses to monitor AI-driven sepsis alerts

Employing remote nurses to monitor sepsis alerts generated by artificial intelligence was crucial to leveraging the technology effectively and saving 375 lives annually, according to Aurora, Colo.-based UC Health. Remote nurses monitor the vital signs of up to 500 patients simultaneously. When an alert sounds, a remote nurse investigates to determine if it requires action and if so, the nurse contacts the patient’s bedside providers or activates special teams working to stop sepsis. Before utilizing remote nurses, the hospital tasked bedside doctors and nurses with responding to the alerts, many of which were false. (The Colorado Sun article, 11/10/23)
