U.S. measles outbreak nears last year’s total

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,231 measles cases for the year on July 10th, bringing the nation to 58 cases short of last year’s total of 2,289 infections and making the U.S. on track to lose its measles elimination status. The 2025 total was the highest reported since 1991, the CDC said. Seventy percent of infections involve people age 19 and younger, with 20% of infections in children age 5 and under. Six percent of patients has been hospitalized, with no reported deaths this year. Among infected individuals, 93% are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status. The states with the highest number of measles cases this year are South Carolina, Utah, Texas, Virginia, Florida and Pennsylvania. (CIDRAP article, 7/10/26)
