CNO sees AI promise for nursing
Nursing leaders should vet artificial intelligence technology and include staff in the development and decision-making involving its use to ensure it benefits staff and patients, says Terry McDonnell, DNP, RN, senior vice president and CNE at Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C. She envisions AI as a tool to aid nurses in making decisions, rather than replacing them. For example, cameras in a patient’s room with AI algorithms could alert a nurse if a patient at risk of falling is attempting to get out of bed, allowing the nurse to intervene. McDonnell believes nurse-led AI care models, including pairing AI with remote monitoring for patients receiving care at home, will improve outcomes and decrease falls and infections.
