CNE discusses how to retain experienced nurses

AONL member Gail Vozzella, DNP, RN, says CNOs should meet with experienced nurses before they decide to retire and ask them where they want their career to be in the next three to five years. Vozzella, the senior vice president and CNE at Houston Methodist, believes offering individuals flexibility can keep experienced nurses working longer. She says virtual nursing retains experienced nurses’ knowledge while providing novice nurses with support. In addition, CNOs can provide experienced nurses with opportunities to mentor novice nurses. Volunteer programs or nurse faculty positions are other options to keep experienced nurses working longer. (HealthLeaders Media article, 3/13/24)
