IHI offers tips for health system AI governance
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement describes four governance strategies for health organizations to employ for responsible and effective artificial intelligence implementation. Based on the feedback of 10 diverse health care organizations, the IHI says governance structures must account for the organizational, ethical and clinical implications of AI and be practical, scalable and centered on patient outcomes. Organizations should develop broad, comprehensive governance structures integrating content expertise and AI competency. In addition, organizations should build governance with scalable capabilities and clear accountability. They should prioritize patient outcomes over model performance. Due to a lack of consistent federal AI regulation in health care, the IHI says organizations should prepare for regulatory gaps and build internal oversight. (IHI blog article, 9/3/25)
