NCI experiences cuts, chaos, employees say
Administration cuts to scientific research are leading to unprecedented upheaval at the National Cancer Institute. Clinicians, scientists and other staff were fired or are leaving. Although NCI-funded research has contributed to a reduction of cancer deaths by a third since the 1990s, the administration has canceled funds for research to fight cancer, expand care and train new oncologists, causing NCI employees to worry progress against cancer will stymie. NCI scientists say staffing cuts and constant changes in policies are leading to delays in getting essential supplies. In addition, the websites publishing new evidence on cancer treatment and diagnosis are not being updated because the administration laid off the workers who managed the updates. (KFF article, 7/9/25)
