Nursing turnover signs appear before resignations, Press Ganey says
Disengagement, diminished feedback and decreased trust often are present months before nurses resign, making turnover a predictable outcome of conditions, according to the Press Ganey State of Nursing 2026 report. Nursing leaders and organizations can offer earlier, more targeted interventions ─ including onboarding, support and connection ─ to retain more of the 22% of Gen Z and 21% of millennials resigning. Organizations successfully reducing turnover treat physical and psychological safety as baseline conditions. They design work to reduce friction and enable nurses to decompress. They rely on professional governance to enable nurses to improve outcomes, and they ensure leadership is visible, accessible and responsive, reinforcing trust through consistent follow-through. Press Ganey based the report on feedback from more than 422,000 RNs and 41,000 advanced practice providers. (Press Ganey Insights article, 5/11/26)
