HHS, ASN launch competition to redesign dialysis

Researchers, innovators, patients and others with expertise in nephology are invited to submit proposals to Redesign Dialysis Phase 2, a competition to develop prototypes to improve dialysis. Prototypes should address at least one of the following areas: blood filtration, electrolyte homeostasis, volume regulation, toxin removal and secretion, filtrate drainage and connectivity and dialysis access. Up to three winners will be awarded $500,000 each. Submissions are due at 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 31, 2020. Submission requirements and other information is available online. Redesign Dialysis Phase 2 is the second in a series of KidneyX prize competitions cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). The competitions are intended to catalyze the development of innovative approaches to kidney diseases. More than one in seven U.S. adults live with kidney disease, yet the treatment has not changed substantially since dialysis was first introduced 60 years ago. (HHS news release, 11/18/19)
