NYONL study explores nurse leader self-care practices

Older nurse leaders tend to take work breaks and vacation, according to a study published in the August issue of Nurse Leader. They also were more likely to engage in spiritual practices and acknowledge success at work. The information is consistent with previous research finding nurses with less experience had greater levels of stress and burnout. The prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study surveyed members of the New York Organization of Nurse Leaders on their self-care practices; 92 of the organization’s 533 members responded. The authors call for nurse leaders to prioritize and promote self-care practices across the profession and to conduct further research with larger sample sizes to determine self-care best practices and motivating factors for nurse leaders.
