Nurse leaders offer advice on nurse retention
Nurse leaders should meet with novice nurses within the first 30 to 90 days of their employment to discuss their career paths and develop a plan for meeting their goals, say AONL members Peggy Norton-Rosko, DNP, RN, and Abigail Rudy, MSN, RN. Leaders should ensure novice nurses feel comfortable approaching them with their needs. Similarly, leaders can enable experienced nurses to share their knowledge through virtual nursing or telehealth positions and offer flexibility for nurses who have other caregiving responsibilities. CNOs should build leadership pipelines and plan for succession. Norton-Rosko is senior vice president and CNO at University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, and Rudy is vice president, nursing and adult critical care at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa. (HealthLeaders Media article, 5/7/25)
