Nursing groups urge creating workplace civility policies

Workplace civility was the subject of a position statement released this week by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA), the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). The statement calls on facilities to develop collaborative, comprehensive policies to address the “identification, mitigation, evaluation, and reporting of uncivil behavior as well as intervention and accountability” to eliminate such behavior. “The operating room can be particularly prone to workplace incivility, due to its high-stress, complex nature,” AORN’s president said in a statement. The organizations pledged to promote a safe and healthy work environment in all perioperative areas. (Newswise news release, 10/5/21)
