Program trains nurses to lead evidence-based change efforts

To effectively lead evidence-based quality improvement efforts, nurses need to be able to function as change agents, according to an article in the Journal of Nursing Administration. To support the professional development of nurses leading evidence-based practice (EBP) projects, nurses at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City initiated a pilot EBP Change Champion program. It aimed to nurture the professional growth of point-of-care nurses so they could function as change agents applying EBP in daily practice. A case study describes an effort by EBP change champions to engage nursing assistants in reducing the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections on a 32-bed post-surgical unit. The effort received strong support from managers. The authors believe EBP change champions and similar professional development programs can help organizations achieve their goals for quality care.
