Role clarity supports better NP/MD critical care teamwork

A significant association exists between perceived role clarity and increased perceptions of excellent teamwork and disaster preparedness, write researchers in this month’s Nursing Outlook. They based their findings on data gathered in a random national sample survey of physicians (MDs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) working in U.S. emergency, trauma, intensive and critical care units. Because team coordination is vital to providing high quality, efficient care in critical care and disaster situations, health care organizations need to assure team roles and responsibilities are clear, the researchers conclude.
