Black scientists seek to fix bias in pulse oximetry readings

Several Black scientists are working on solutions to overcome bias in pulse oximetry devices that do not work as well on darker-skinned patients, according to a STAT article. Physicians rely on pulse oximeters to treat and monitor COVID-19 patients, leading to disparities in care between darker-skinned patients and lighter-skinned patients. Though the disparity has been in place for decades, few white scientists have addressed the issue, and the disparity did not receive funding support until the COVID-19 pandemic. The article explained how the problem with pulse oximeters underscores the need for greater diversity in engineering: only 5% of America’s engineering workforce is Black, and less than 2% are Black women.
