Article details ways to reduce pain management biases

A series on pain offers nurses guidance on how to explain pain to patients and family caregivers and how to reduce pain management biases, especially for people from underrepresented backgrounds. Published in the American Journal of Nursing in collaboration with the AARP Public Policy Institute, the series will help to ensure nurses provide caregivers with tools to manage their family member’s health care at home. The perception of pain has been misunderstood and overlooked especially in underrepresented care recipients and caregivers, the authors wrote. These same patients “are likely to experience challenges navigating a complex, biased health care system,” they added. Nurses can refer caregivers to an information sheet and instructional videos.
