CNOs describe how to return experienced nurses to the bedside
To bring experienced nurses back to the bedside, UPMC CNE and Vice President of Patient Services Maribeth McLaughlin, BSN, RN, says UPMC offers tailored educational training in technology during orientation. McLaughlin, an AONL member, says Pittsburgh-based UPMC stresses work-life harmony and allows candidates to shadow before accepting a position. AONL member Deanna Sievert, DNP, RN, senior vice president and CNO at Rush University in Chicago, says Rush contacts former bedside nurses with new opportunities in case they want to return. To retain experienced nurses, Rush prioritizes shared professional governance. Experienced nurses also are designing staffing models allowing for fewer weekend and holiday shifts, she says.
