High-performing Nurse Managers Improve Outcomes
High-performing nurse managers attained significantly higher metrics on their units, including more RNs who intended to stay, higher quality of care and lower missed nursing care, compared with low-performing nurse managers, a study found. Published in the Journal of Nursing Administration November issue, the study used the 2022 National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators Annual RN Survey of Press Ganey client hospitals. Units with higher-performing nurse managers reported between 21% and 32% more nurses intending to stay compared with units led by lower-performing nurse managers. The authors say CNOs should strive to improve lower-performing nurse manager effectiveness within a specified timeframe. Higher-performing nurse managers should receive mentoring, stay interviews and leadership development planning.
