NEJM Op-Ed: Nurse scientists bring trusted voice in health communications

While confidence in science and medicine has fallen significantly in recent years, nurses have retained the public’s trust, making nurse scientists an underutilized resource in communicating important health messages, states a New England Journal of Medicine Op-Ed. Their doctoral level training combines scientific methodology with clinical experience, allowing them to communicate complex findings in ways that respond to patients’ concerns and are scientifically accurate. Their close contact with patients fosters trust, a crucial component of effective health communication. The author suggests incorporating media training into doctoral and post-doctoral nursing education, as well as encouraging national nursing organizations to develop spokesperson programs to recommend nurse scientists to journalists and coordinate quick responses to emerging health threats.
