Nurse-led rapid response team improves stroke outcomes
A nurse-led rapid response for patients experiencing a stroke at a Texas academic hospital improved time from symptom discovery to imaging and treatment, which is associated with better outcomes. The patient’s primary nurse was responsible for activating the rapid response team when observing a change in neurological status. The responding rapid response nurse performed an assessment and activated an in-hospital code stroke via pager to key personnel if warranted. The rapid-response nurse then authorized relevant diagnostic exams and imaging. Six years of data showed patients who underwent imaging through the nurse-led team did so in an average of 15.7 minutes compared with 23.2 minutes for those not using the nurse-led team. Imaging results were received eight minutes faster. Advanced Critical Care published the study. (Newswise news release, 1/13/26)
