Self-aware nurse managers are more likely to lead healthier workplaces
Nurse managers who exhibit greater levels of self-awareness are more likely to lead workplaces clinical nurses consider healthy, according to an article published in the October issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration. The descriptive, correlational cross-sectional study consisted of 46 nurse managers and 62 clinical nurses at NYU Langone Health in New York City. The study also found a strong positive relationship between nurse manager and clinical nurse perceptions of a healthy work environment. Among other suggestions, the authors say nurse managers can strengthen their self-awareness skills by journaling, reflection and soliciting performance feedback, while nurse executives can role model self-awareness behaviors and provide regular performance feedback and recognition to nurse managers, as well as offer nurse managers time for personal development.
