Split nurse faculty roles could address nursing shortage

Ochsner Health is among the health systems creating split faculty roles, allowing nurses to work at hospitals and serve as adjunct faculty. AONL member and Ochsner Health CNO Tiffany Murdock, DNP, RN, says adjunct faculty members who work at hospitals can “speak to real-life experiences and share what nursing is really like.” In addition, using split faculty helps new nurses adjust better to clinical practice and aligns with curriculum updates as practice changes. Split faculty further address low pay in teaching positions, permit experienced nurses to share their knowledge without leaving the bedside and stay employed longer, as well as increase capacity at nursing schools. The New Orleans-based system has almost 30 nurses who teach each semester. (Becker’s Hospital Review article, 4/28/25)
