Penn Nursing report proposes guidelines for AI use in nursing
A University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing report contends that while artificial intelligence could decrease paperwork and improve patient monitoring, it raises concerns about bias, accountability and patient privacy. Published in Nursing Outlook, the report draws on an interdisciplinary Penn workshop. The authors say nursing science should guide AI integration due to its focus on patient-centered care, clinical workflow and advocacy. They propose guidelines for integrating AI into nursing science, including expanding AI education in nursing, integrating nurses in AI development and rigorously testing AI before adopting it widely. They call on nurses to measure the real financial and workflow costs, to build ethical safeguards and transparency, and to forge stronger partnerships with industry.
